Regular bus services leave Yangon for Mawlamyine nightly. All buses now go direct to Mawlamyine via Mottoma over the Thanlwin Bridge since it opened in February 2005. Although Mawlamyine is only 165 kilometers from Yangon point-to-point across the Gulf of Mottama, it's distance overland is 245 kilometers and the journey takes approximately 7 hours including a short stop for a meal and toilet break.
 
There are many buses to Mawlamyine but the main ones to choose from are PTT and Man Dalar Minn Express with PTT offering a special class service configuring buses with more leg room with 3 abreast seating, with two seats on the left of the aisle, and one seat right of the aisle. Tickets for PTT can be purchased at the south end of Aung San stadium opposite the Yangon train station and costs 8000 kyat to Mawlamyine. PTT buses depart Yangon from its own terminal on War Dan St, west of the city at 8 pm and 9pm and arrive Mawlamyine at 3am and 4am respectively. The return service by PTT however costs 10,000 kyat and departs Mawlamyine at 9 and 10pm, and arrive Yangon at 4am and 5 am in the morning.

Man Dalar Minn Express offers modern, new airconditioned buses as well and are very popular along this route.
 
The Mawlamyine bus station is located in Myay Ni Gone quarter, near the new train station on the eastern side of the ridge about 3 km from the main town centre. To get to downtown Zeigyi, you can take a motorcycle taxis (seikeh) for about 1000 kyat or if you have luggage, then a thoun bein can be hired for about 3000 kyat.There are usually many taxis and thoun beins waiting when the buses arrive early in the morning so looking for transport in to town this early in the morning will not be a problem.
